GTU to rethink physics exclusion in elec engg

Just as Gujarat Technological University (GTU) diploma engineering colleges are set to begin the second semester, students and teachers have come across a difficult set of changes in the curriculum.

According to teachers familiar with the curriculum changes in line with the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020, the second-semester syllabus for electrical engineering students does not include modern physics, which was made a compulsory basic science subject by the university in the 2024-25 session.

Teachers have raised the issue with GTU, requesting a change as not learning the subject will not only affect students’ performance in the diploma-to-degree entrance test but also the college’s performance in getting course accreditation in future.

“Physics is an important engineering subject, and not teaching students in the second semester will only have an adverse impact on them. The Diploma-to-Degree Common Entrance Test (DDCET) has significant weightage given to physics subjects. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) model syllabus for engineering also has physics in all semesters,” said a teacher who emailed GTU for reconsideration.

GTU responds
GTU registrar K N Kher said that the university had received the representation. “We will take a decision in this regard before second-semester education starts...The decision on the subject  will be rectified,” he said.
